Your opinion on Steam's 30% cut.

Main Post:

Hello, recently I've seen some talk about lowering Steam's 30% cut of each sale online as well as a lawsuit where it might've come up. Whilst a GDC survey (with 3k responses) had an overwhelming majority say the cut should be lowered, I was curious and wanted to ask that same question in a place with a lot more people who are indie devs (like this) to see if it'd be the same response or different.

Top Comment: You're basically asking: "All else being equal, would you like more money?" It's insane to answer anything other than "Yes, please!". What we really need is more storefront competition. Serious (looking at you, Epic) competition.

Interesting scraped/cut content from final versions of pieces of media

Main Post:

Videogames are things that can take A LONG TIME to be done, during that period a lot of ideas can be devoleped upon, but, not end up in the final product even though they are really interesting, one of the first examples that comes to mind is the early desgin for P5 Sae Nijima that basically makes her look like Bayonetta.

Another gold mine of interesting scraped/cut content is the Danganronpa series, in fact, i would recomend anyone that plays those games to take at least one look at the scraped content because it can help a lot of stuff in the final product make way more sense, for example: the early concept designs for two characters in Danganronpa 2 were basically swaped with each other at some point during development and their backstories/behaviors make a whole lot of more sense when you consider that they used to look like each other at some point.

Top Comment: Just take a look at dark souls and other souls adjacent games they're full of really interesting cut content. Like how oscar the guy who gives you the estus flask had a cut story where you'd face him towards the end of the game in dark souls 1 to use just one example. Or the whole kale story from elden ring.

What are some standout examples of games that had massive content cuts?

Main Post:

I'll go for an easy couple;

  1. Final Fantasy XV - Starts off promising with a big open world, but by the second half it's just linear areas that speedrun wrapping up the plot. Also major events happening offscreen (yes I know this was to promote other media, but most didn't like it)
  2. Fable 3 - When you take the throne, the days start ticking down until <big event>, IIRC it's perhaps a year. Suddenly it starts skipping huge timespans without warning, then the end is here.

Top Comment:

Fallout New Vegas actually had quite a few massive cuts from what I’ve heard.

The Strip was supposed to be a massive continuous area without the annoying loading screens and invisible walls, but console limitations prevented it from being possible.

There was also apparently supposed to be far more Legion NPCs and quests that would’ve made them feel less one-dimensional. Seems like they are painted as just the bad guys in the game but the cut content was supposed to make them a better contender for a faction to actually choose and want to be a part of

If you appreciate narrative-driven games with minimal gameplay involvement that also tell a fantastic story, then you probably won't find it better than Slay the Princess.

GamingTrend - David Flynn - 100 / 100

Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut is a fantastic expansion to an already amazing game. The new and altered routes fit perfectly with the rest, fleshing out Princesses that previously had short interactions. The Pristine Cut wasn't necessary to make this a must play game, but I'm very glad it's here.

MonsterVine - Nick Mangiaracina - 4 / 5

A winding and divergent narrative, Slay the Princess - The Pristine Cut is the ultimate version of Slay the Princess and one that I would recommend to almost anyone.

Niche Gamer - Fingal Belmont - 9 / 10

You’ll be shocked, you’ll cry, and you’ll wonder why. The text-based gameplay will be a hurdle for some gamers to accept, but any gamer with an open mind and willingness to explore will be swept up in the story in Slay the Princess – The Pristine Cut.

Siliconera - Yasmine Hubbard - 9 / 10

Slay the Princess: The Pristine Cut twists the traditional story of a hero rescuing a poor damsel in distress into an eerie horror experience that explores topics surrounding life and death, free will and the purpose of existence.

Uagna - Chiara Ferrè - Italian - 7.8 / 10

Slay The Princess: The Pristine Cut brings the visual horror novel to consoles, but that's not all: thanks to new avenues to explore and the Italian translation of the texts, grinding out game after game to unlock never-before-seen outcomes has never been so satisfying. This original title can last three hours, or much longer. To kill or not to kill? Investigate the mysterious voices accompanying the hero or just follow orders? Save the princess or give free rein to violence? It is up to the player to choose who to be and who to become, and if you are not satisfied... just select ‘New Game’!

Windows Central - Zachary Boddy - 4 / 5

Slay the Princess is a critically acclaimed visual novel that has enjoyed a ton of positive reception, and now it's on consoles with all-new paths, endings, dialogue, and art. It's an excellent expansion of an already-great game that reminds me of The Stanley Parable in the best, most terrifying way possible. However, the user interface and menus still lack refinement and I encountered several technical issues — I have to review the game as it is now, and it's a little rough around the edges.

XboxEra - Genghis Husameddin - 9.2 / 10

Slay the Princess – The Pristine Cut is a fantastic visual novel with excellent production values and a lot of dialogue options. You’ll go through a tonne of emotions (mostly unease), but you’ll always remain engaged thanks to a great voice cast and a script that is more than happy to explore uncomfortable ideas. ∎

Top Comment: This was an awesome game. Dont know if I'll be back for the dlc, but it's worth giving it a go if you haven't.

That lawsuit against Steam’s 30% cut of game sales is now a class action, meaning many other developers could benefit

Main Post: That lawsuit against Steam’s 30% cut of game sales is now a class action, meaning many other developers could benefit

Top Comment: Something about this feels so disingenuous. One half reads like they are just upset at the 30% cut but the other reads like they are upset that other stores aren't as popular as valve. But how is that valves fault? EGS threw millions to try and take customers from steam and failed. Steam itself is embedded into PC culture, how is that inherently valves fault? I don't trust a studio that sued because other stores are failing to compete, they have to have ties to people that compete against steam.

Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut is Out Now

Main Post: Slay the Princess — The Pristine Cut is Out Now

Top Comment: If you're looking for a spoiler-free incentive to buy this game, it's a lot like Stanley Parable, but with a horror edge, and a more visual novel presentation, with routes being chosen with dialogue rather than physically walking down a path. It's still humorous, dry British style humour (also similar to Portal, particularly Portal 2, in that regard), and some similar ideas are shared between the games, like say an ever-present narrator that does more than just narrate. This game is an experience, and if anything I said sounds appealing, just jump right in and don't look up too much else. It's very much a "the less you know, the better" type of game, blind experiences are the optimal experiences.

Lore cut from the games is not canon, change my mind

Main Post:

All that lore was cut for a reason. They're all essentially fanfics written by Gamefreak employees, not official lore. It's all just proposed ideas that never got given approval for the final product.

Top Comment: Who's saying it's canon? People seem to just be finding it insane/hilarious that it was ever written in the first place. It clearly had 0 chance of ever making it into content, so what reason could there have ever been for it?

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Update 1

Main Post: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Update 1

Top Comment: I'm playing on early access, before the update I was playing with Supreme settings in 4k, solid 115 FPS on a Nvidia 4080. After the update I've turned on full ray/path tracing, now I'm getting 90 FPS. So performance did take a hit, which is to be expected, but it looks amazing. 90 FPS with no noticeable frame lag or screen tearing is just fine by me. An amazing game got a little bit more amazing.
